Answer: |
A recent survey of employees and managers shows that job seekers these days are much more likely to accept a job if offered a laptop computer than they are if offered a company vehicle. Four out of five of those interviewed stated that a laptop (or other technology) is the discretionary benefit they are most hoping to receive from their next employer. Other benefits that applicants are looking for include:
- ongoing training opportunities (77%),
- flex-time (67%), and
- tuition reimbursement (52%).
Only 28 percent of survey respondents chose "use of company car" as the perk they were most hoping to receive. "A company car is a nice perk but it really doesn't do anything for one's career," explained Bernadette Kenny, executive vice president of Lee Hecht Harrison, who conducted the survey.
"Today's job seekers are much more interested in programs and benefits that will enhance their professional capabilities and allow them more flexibility in terms of when and how they work," Kenny said. "Laptops and other technologies, for instance, enable people to access information and get work done from almost anyplace they might be. Likewise, ongoing training opportunities allow employees to continually develop new skills so that they remain valuable and employable regardless of changes in the world of work. Both those things give workers a level of freedom that a car can't provide."
