Employer Strategies Promote A "Culture Of Health And Financial Security"

From Spencer's Benefits Reports: MetLife's 5th Annual Employee Benefits Trend Study confirms that more employers are implementing worksite wellness and prevention programs to help contain health care costs. More than one-fourth (28%) of all employers and nearly half (49%) of companies with 500 or more employees offered some type of a wellness program in 2006, and 43% of the sponsoring employers believe that their employees highly value these programs, according to the MetLife study.

Incentives for participation in employer-sponsored wellness programs include health insurance credits for employees following wellness guidelines such as exercise, nutrition, check-ups, and disease screenings, offered by 17% of employers. Nearly one-third (31%) of employers with 500 or more employees offer these wellness credit—up from 25% one year earlier. Some plan sponsors also impose financial penalties on employees who do not follow wellness guidelines—9% of all employers and 19% of employers with 500 or more employees do so.

The MetLife study also found the following:

The MetLife study consisted of two separate surveys of populations at firms with at least two employees, one of 1,202 diverse full-time employees age 21 or older, and the second one of 1,514 benefits decision-makers at companies representing a mix of industries and geographic regions.
