NFIB Advances Role In Health Reform

From Spencer's Benefits Reports: The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has announced its new initiative, “Solutions Start Here,” to urge policymakers at the state and federal level, as well as presidential candidates, to “deliver real and meaningful health care reform for small business.”

The NFIB asserts that small businesses are disproportionately burdened by health care costs. Of the 47 million Americans without health insurance, more than 27 million are small business owners, their employees, or their dependents, the NFIB explained. Furthermore, current law does not provide small businesses the same tax breaks, coverage, or pooling options as large businesses and corporations and, on average, they pay 18% more for the same health care benefits.

According to an NFIB survey, 43% of voters polled were part of the small business community, and more than half (53%) of small business voters, defined as owners and their employees, agree that health care is the “most important factor” in determining their vote. Slightly more than four-fifths of small business owners said that finding affordable health care for themselves and their employees is a challenge, with 16% saying that it is their greatest challenge. In addition, 71% of small business voters believe that health care should be a top priority for the next president.

“Small business owners and employees are shouldering an overwhelming and disproportionate burden of a broken health care system,” said Todd Stottlemyer, president and chief executive officer of the NFIB. “The needs of America’s small businesses must be included in health care reform, because when it’s fixed for small business it’s fixed for America.”

Among the strategies that the NFIB plans to channel through the Solutions Start Here effort are health care reform forums in seven cities nationwide and research on the health insurance preferences of small businesses.
