Majority Of Americans Want Preventive Health Services

From Spencer's Benefits Reports: Sixty-eight percent of Americans want a greater emphasis placed upon preventive health services, according to a new survey commissioned by U.S. Preventive Medicine. The survey also found that 50.2% of respondents said that they knew of an instance where taking preventive health measures might have avoided a major illness for themselves, their family, or friends. Despite this statistic, 38.5% said that they do not worry about their health until there is a problem, and 39.5% said that they do not know what preventive health measures they should take.

Eighty-one percent of survey respondents indicated that their insurance covered advanced preventive health measures, such as a mammogram and colonoscopy, but only 55.6% said that they always take advantage of these benefits. This circumstance could be remedied, according to 78.8% of respondents, if a specific prevention health benefit was part of their overall health insurance.

The poll, conducted in July 2007, also asked a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults age 18 or older this question: What in your opinion are solutions to America’s health care challenges? The survey found that 61.3% of respondents believed that government-required, universal health care was a possible solution to the health care crisis, and 48% thought that health savings accounts with tax incentives was a viable solution.
