SSA announces TNEV; other BSO items

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has made several announcements, summarized below, for employers.

Telephone number employer verification (TNEV)

Currently, SSA telephone agents can verify up to five employee social security numbers (SSNs) for employers. Beginning in the fall of 2009, the SSA will no longer provide this service. Employers and/or employees must use TNEV or SSNVS to verify SSNs. Employees who verify SSNs for their employers must be registered SSNVS users in order to access TNEV and/or SSNVS. Those who are not a SSNVS user should register immediately. TNEV is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. More information is reproduced in this Report Letter on page 12.

Alternative FAX number

The SSA is experiencing high volumes of faxes. Those who cannot get through at fax number 570-706-7874, should try the alternate fax number 570-706-7875. Do not use an auto-dialer which could result in busy signals.

Connect:Direct

Connect: Direct is being replaced with CyberFusion. Beginning June 30, 2009, for state agencies and September 30, 2009, for federal agencies, the SSA will no longer accept wage reporting files transmitted via Connect:Direct. For more information, contact the state or federal Connect:Direct administrator. For, additional help, contact SSA's Office of Telecommunications and Systems Operations at DataExchangeMigration@SSA.GOV.
