Minimum Wage Law
In the November 2, 2004, general election, Nevada voters approved a ballot measure to increase the minimum wage through amendment of the Nevada Constitution; however, Section 2 of Article 19 of the Constitution requires such an amendment to be approved one more time by voters in 2006 before the measure can take effect. Nevada voters said "yes" to Ballot Question No. 6, which calls for a new section to be added to Article 15 of the Nevada Constitution that would require employers to pay $6.15 an hour to employees if the employer does not provide health benefits, but would require the employer to pay employees $5.15 an hour if health benefits are in place. The measure also calls for the minimum wage rate to increase along with any increases in the federal rate over $5.15 an hour or, if greater, by the cumulative increase in the cost of living as measured by the Consumer Price Index (Ballot Question #6, November 2, 2004). |
