Social Security Benefits to increase by 5.8% for 2009; maximum earnings amount subject to FICA increases to $106,800 from $102,000

The Social Security Administration has announced that the monthly benefit for 55 million Americans will increase by 5.8% next year. This is the largest increase since 1982. The maximum amount of earnings subject to the Social Security tax (taxable maximum) will increase to $106,800 from $102,000. Of the estimated 164 million workers who will pay Social Security taxes in 2009, about 11 million will pay higher taxes as a result of the increase in the taxable maximum. Iowa announces weekly UI benefit amounts
For the year beginning July 5, 2009, the maximum weekly benefit amounts in Iowa are $374 for an individual with no dependents, $388 for an individual with one dependent, $402 for an individual with two dependents, $423 for an individual with three dependents, and $459 for an individual with four or more dependents.
