Federal and many state minimum wage rates to go up in July
The federal minimum hourly wage rate will increase to $6.55 on July 24. This federal increase is the second part of a three-step increase put in place by enactment of House Resolution 2206 on May 25, 2007, amending the federal Fair Labor Standards Act to provide for increases to $5.85 per hour on July 1, 2007, $6.55 per hour on July 24, 2008, and $7.25 per hour on July 1, 2009.

Connecticut General Assembly overrides governor's veto of minimum wage increase
The Connecticut General Assembly voted June 23, 2008, to override Governor M. Jodi Rell's (R) veto of legislation that will raise the state's minimum wage from $7.65 to $8.00 beginning January 1, 2009, and to $8.25 beginning January 1, 2010. In addition to overriding the minimum wage legislation (H.B. 5105), the General Assembly also voted to override the governor's veto of a companion bill (S.B. 55) that will increase the minimum wage tip credit for bartenders and waitstaff.

BLS reports on benefits cost increases by industry, region
Employer costs for employee compensation averaged $28.46 per hour worked in March 2008, the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics reported. Wages and salaries, which averaged $19.83, accounted for 69.7 percent of these costs, while benefits, which averaged $8.63, accounted for the remaining 30.3 percent.

OSHA has cited two Massachusetts contractors for alleged violations of safety standards at a Concord construction site and proposed combined penalties totaling $120,200.
